Where is Time?

A structural description of how systems resolve from one state to another.
This is not an analogy or interpretation. It specifies the relations that produce what we observe as time.
It is intended as a formal, minimal model of state transition under constraint.

We say time moves forward.

What does that actually mean?

Take any system.

It is in a state σ. This state is the system as it exists, not a representation.

From that state, there are possible ways it could continue (Ω(σ)).

Only what the system allows: (σ′ ∈ Ω(σ)).

Two cases:

Case 1 — One way forward

There is exactly one way the system can continue.

It does.

Case 2 — More than one way forward

There is more than one way the system can continue.

One is realized.

There are no other cases.

Now remove time from your explanation.

In both cases, what happens?

σ resolves into one allowed continuation σ′.

Nothing else is required.

No step invokes time.
No mechanism uses it.

What remains is an ordering between states.

So where does direction come from?

From the structure of what is allowed.

At any given state:

some continuations are allowed
others are not

And this is not symmetric.

If a state can resolve into another,
it does not follow that the reverse is allowed.

That asymmetry is enough to produce directed succession.

When these relations are globally consistent, they appear as a single direction.

This direction is not caused by time.
It is the structure of those relations.

This is not a statement about probability or likelihood.

It is a statement about what is structurally allowed.

The Answer

What we call the arrow of time is not caused by time.

It is caused by how the system constrains what can follow from a state.

From any state, multiple continuations may be possible,
but only one becomes real.

Time is the name we give to that ordering when we observe it across states.

So the question is no longer:

Why does time move forward?

It is:

What determines what is allowed?

And when more than one continuation is allowed,

who, or what, determines what becomes real?

That is the problem space of this century.
