A Structural Classification Using the Algebra of Becoming
Distinguishing Adaptive Response from Interpretation

Abstract

The term interpretation is frequently applied to phenomena ranging from animal cognition to machine learning classification and institutional decision-making. In many cases the term is used to describe processes that differ structurally. This paper proposes a structural clarification. Using the Algebra of Becoming, interpretation is defined as a process that occurs only when baseline continuation governance fails and multiple candidate meanings imply divergent continuation trajectories. Under these conditions, systems capable of generating, evaluating, selecting, and binding candidate meanings perform interpretive resolution. The paper introduces the Interpretive System Theorem, which specifies the structural architecture required for a system to perform interpretation. Using this theorem, systems can be classified into reactive systems, adaptive systems, bounded interpretive systems, and general interpretive systems. The relationship between interpretive systems and meaning systems is clarified: interpretive systems generate stabilized regimes of action-governing meaning that subsequently regulate system continuation across time.

1. Introduction

The concept of interpretation appears across many domains of research. Animals are described as interpreting threats. Artificial systems are described as interpreting images or language. Humans and institutions are described as interpreting evidence, rules, and social signals.

These uses frequently refer to processes that differ structurally. In many cases interpretation is used interchangeably with learning, classification, or adaptive response. Such usage obscures important distinctions between different forms of system behavior.

This paper addresses a foundational question:

Which systems actually perform interpretation?

The analysis proceeds from the Algebra of Becoming, which formalizes how systems move from one realized state to the next under governing constraints. Within that framework, interpretation occurs only under specific structural conditions.

Interpretation becomes necessary when baseline governance fails to determine a unique continuation trajectory and multiple candidate meanings imply distinct continuation possibilities. Systems capable of generating candidate meanings, evaluating them, selecting among them, and binding a governing interpretation are interpretive systems.

Systems lacking this architecture may still respond to signals, learn from experience, or optimize behavior. However such systems do not perform interpretation.

The paper develops three objectives.

  • First, it derives the algebraic conditions under which interpretation becomes necessary.

  • Second, it introduces the Interpretive System Theorem, specifying the architecture required for interpretive resolution.

  • Third, it applies these conditions to classify biological, artificial, and institutional systems.

2. Algebraic Conditions for Interpretation

Interpretation becomes necessary only when determinacy collapses. This condition is defined as Action Determinacy Loss:

The Algebra of Becoming does not specify the mechanisms that generate candidates. Neural processes, social reasoning, or algorithmic computation may all serve as candidate generation mechanisms.

3. The Interpretive System Theorem

The algebraic structure above specifies when interpretation becomes necessary. It does not yet specify which systems possess the architecture required to perform interpretive resolution.

Interpretive System Theorem

A system qualifies as an interpretive system if and only if it possesses structural mechanisms capable of performing the following operations whenever Action Determinacy Loss occurs and candidate trajectories diverge.

  • The system must be capable of generating candidate meanings from signals and system state.

  • The system must be capable of sustaining multiple admissible candidate meanings simultaneously within an evaluation field.

  • The system must be capable of comparing candidate meanings as distinct continuation trajectories.

  • The system must be capable of selecting one candidate as governing through a selection operator.

  • The system must be capable of binding the selected candidate into action-governing meaning that constrains continuation.

Systems lacking any of these mechanisms may still exhibit adaptive or learned behavior but cannot perform interpretive resolution.

4. Interpretation and Adaptive Response

The theorem allows a clear distinction between interpretation and adaptive behavior.

Reactive systems map signals directly to responses. Examples include reflex circuits and regulatory mechanisms. These systems do not generate candidate meanings and therefore cannot perform interpretation.

Adaptive systems learn from experience and can discriminate between stimuli through mechanisms such as associative learning or reinforcement optimization. Many animal species demonstrate highly developed adaptive learning capacities. However the mapping between signals and responses may remain encoded in learned associations rather than resolved through evaluation of competing candidate meanings.

Interpretive systems differ from reactive and adaptive systems because they maintain candidate multiplicity long enough to evaluate alternative continuation trajectories before binding a governing interpretation.

5. Interpretive Systems and Meaning Systems

The distinction between interpretive systems and meaning systems must be clarified.

  • An interpretive system is a system capable of performing interpretive resolution under conditions of Action Determinacy Loss.

  • A meaning system is a stabilized regime of action-governing meanings that regulates continuation across time.

Meaning systems emerge through repeated interpretive resolution. When particular interpretations are repeatedly selected and stabilized, they become embedded in baseline governance structures that guide future interpretation and action.

Interpretive systems therefore generate and revise meaning systems. Meaning systems subsequently structure the interpretive activity that occurs within them.

6. Classification of System Types

The Interpretive System Theorem allows systems to be classified according to their interpretive architecture.

  4. General interpretive systems possess robust interpretive architecture across domains. Human cognition demonstrates the capacity to generate multiple candidate explanations, evaluate competing trajectories, and bind interpretations that guide action.

Institutions represent distributed interpretive systems. Legal, regulatory, and governance institutions frequently encounter conditions of Action Determinacy Loss and perform structured interpretive resolution through deliberation and decision procedures.

7. Empirical Stress Tests

Empirical research provides several relevant cases.

Studies of corvid cognition show that crows recognize specific human faces associated with threat and transmit this information socially across generations. These behaviors demonstrate highly developed associative learning and social communication. However the observed behavior can be explained through learned stimulus classifications without requiring candidate evaluation under interpretive suspension.

Collective animal systems such as bird flocks and insect colonies coordinate complex group behavior through local interaction rules and signal propagation. These systems demonstrate complex coordination but do not appear to evaluate competing candidate meanings before acting.

9. Implications

This framework yields several implications.

Interpretation is structurally rarer than many discussions of cognition suggest. Many systems capable of learning and adaptation do not possess full interpretive architecture.

Meaning systems require interpretive systems. Stabilized regimes of action-governing meaning cannot exist without systems capable of repeated interpretive resolution.

The framework also provides a structured method for analyzing artificial intelligence systems. Systems that generate candidate outputs but lack autonomous valuation and binding mechanisms may not qualify as interpretive systems.

10. Research Agenda

Future research can extend this framework by investigating the evolutionary origins of interpretive architecture, the structural conditions under which artificial systems might develop interpretive capacity, and the dynamics through which distributed systems such as organizations perform interpretive resolution.

Such investigations support the analysis of how meaning systems emerge and evolve across biological and institutional domains.
